When seventeen-year-old Emma leaves her best friend Abi at a party in the woods, she believes, like most girls her age, that their lives are just beginning。 Many things will happen that night, but Emma will never see her friend again。

Abi's disappearance cracks open the façade of the small town of Whistling Ridge, its intimate history of long-held grudges and resentment。 Even within Abi's family, there are questions to be asked - of Noah, the older brother whom Abi betrayed, of Jude, the shining younger sibling who hides his battle scars, of Dolly, her mother and Samuel, her father - both in thrall to the fire and brimstone preacher who holds the entire town in his grasp。 Then there is Rat, the outsider, whose presence in the town both unsettles and excites those around him。

Anything could happen in Whistling Ridge, this tinder box of small-town rage, and all it will take is just one spark - the truth of what really happened that night out at the Tall Bones。。。。

'Smart and compassionate, full of poetry and rage and shy hopes and shredded dreams and missing girls and family secrets and the dark, shameful underbelly of small town life。' TAMMY COHEN, author of Stop at Nothing

'Tall Bones brilliantly conjures up the oppressive claustrophobia of the small town。。。 Extremely well written。。。 fantastic。' HARRIET TYCE, author of Blood Orange

'A clever, twisting debut, about the dark side of small town America。 It is packed with secrets like firecrackers ready to ignite。' FRANCINE TOON, author of Pine

This was a dark and rather disturbing book。 It’s told in several timelines that I found very hard to follow。 It jumps back and forth so much and just felt real disjointed。 The idea of the book sounded really good and interesting but for me it didn’t turn out that way。 I’m sure there are others who will really like this bookThanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the early copy

I liked the diversity in this book, along with the ending。 It had a series of good twists and turns, although the final one was pretty obvious。 It takes a lot for a thriller to really speak to me after having read so many。 Still, at 3-1/2 stars, Anna Bailey did a good job。 Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an ARC。 This review contains my honest, unbiased opinion。

Set in a small God fearing town in Colorado , a teenage girl has disappeared。Her father was despicable and the known town drunk。 So she obviously deserved whatever happened to her coming from her white trash family。。。As the story and search unfolds, each character has their own secrets and possible connection to her disappearance。A good debut that was both haunting and disturbing。。Due in August。

This book tells the story of the disappearance of Abigail, a 17 year old high school student。 She disappears after a party and walking away from her best friend, Emma。 The story that results is about what happened in this family and this small Colorado town。 I would not classify this as much of a mystery as a family/town drama。 This book is full of absolutely horrible people。 Every type of terrible person you can think of (abusive, racist, homophobic, religious zealot) was in this book。 There we This book tells the story of the disappearance of Abigail, a 17 year old high school student。 She disappears after a party and walking away from her best friend, Emma。 The story that results is about what happened in this family and this small Colorado town。 I would not classify this as much of a mystery as a family/town drama。 This book is full of absolutely horrible people。 Every type of terrible person you can think of (abusive, racist, homophobic, religious zealot) was in this book。 There were times when I was reading this that I just had to stop and take a break because it was so heavy。 There were maybe 2-3 people that I liked even a little bit。 Overall, though, this was a well told story。 I did want to keep reading to find out what happened。 A good debut from this author。 Thank you to Atria Books, Anna Bailey and Net Galley for the complimentary digital ARC of this novel。 。。。more

The disappearance of a teenage girl exposes the racism, misogyny, homophobia, and abuse that informs relationship between family, friends, and acquaintances in this small town in Montana。 Given this basic plot line is hardly new, I was expecting the author to devote substantial space to creating a strong sense of place, time, and regional culture。 But this expectation is never realized, and so this small Montana town could be anywhere in America。 At least for me, the result is a predictable stor The disappearance of a teenage girl exposes the racism, misogyny, homophobia, and abuse that informs relationship between family, friends, and acquaintances in this small town in Montana。 Given this basic plot line is hardly new, I was expecting the author to devote substantial space to creating a strong sense of place, time, and regional culture。 But this expectation is never realized, and so this small Montana town could be anywhere in America。 At least for me, the result is a predictable story populated by characters that are no more than shallow, stereotypic caricatures: the Bible-thumping, hell-fire-and-brimstone preacher; the drunken, wife-beating, trailer-trash father, the sensitive and angry closeted son, and so on。 For this reason, I cannot recommend this book。I would like to thank the publisher, NetGalley and the author for an advance copy of this book in exchange for a fair review。 。。。more

This is a good, fairly fast read but heavy and harsh。 The author does a great job of keeping you guessing about what is really going on with the people in this town。 There are topics covered that will not appeal to everyone (I。e。, certain acts in the name of Christianity and some mocking Christian rituals; acts of racism, abuse, rape and homophobia) but the story cast a light on how people treat each other horribly and justify themselves in doing so。 It also shows people can be truly kind though there is not an abundance of kindness in this town。 。。。more

Most, including the police, believe she ran away from home。 But is that what really happened? Many characters in this novel are nasty, spiteful, obnoxious, malicious, and mean-spirited, and that is describing them mildly。 They seemed very real and it is daunting to imagine a town that contains this many vile characters。 However, there are a few characters that stand out positively from the rest。 One is Abigail’s younger brother, Jude。 Another is Emma。 Despite her problems, she is trying to do the right thing。 The third was Rat, a Romanian living in an RV。 While he had some problems, he basically wants to help Emma。The plot is quite dark and contains several twists that are interwoven well。 The author does a great job of world-building。 I was able to easily visualize the setting。 The small town atmosphere came through, but not the positive atmosphere often seen in novels。 This one is full of secrets, alcoholism, racism, and a charismatic pastor that advocates violence and intolerance。 Add to this drugs, rage, domestic violence, child abuse, self-blame, cruelty, narrow-mindedness, inexcusably bad parenting, gossip, lies, maliciousness, bullying, and much more。 What do you get? A suspenseful and emotional novel that pulls a reader in and keeps one looking for something hopeful in Whistling Ridge。 My one quibble was with the frequent shift of perspective from character to character and back and forth in time which broke up the natural flow of the novel。Overall, this book was a study of many characters and group dynamics that was intense, compelling, thought-provoking, and impactful。 What will Emma find out as she digs into Abigail’s disappearance and learns that Abi had her own secrets? Will she solve the puzzle of her friend’s disappearance? I will not forget this book or its characters for a long time, if ever。 It is not an easy book to read, but it is important to understand that attitudes and behaviors such as those shown in this story line exist。Atria Books and Anna Bailey provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley。 This is my honest review。 Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way。 Publication date is currently set for August 3, 2021。 This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine。 。。。more
